Elizabeth Ochoa has a chance at winning two National awards

Published: February 27, 2007

Last term RCHS students in Stephanie Poole’s theatre class had the opportunity to try something a bit different. Instead of the usual question and answer style tests for the term exam, the students were required to write a one act play to enter in a national contest.

A total of eighteen plays were written, some of the students in Ms. Poole’s class choosing to pair up with other classmates. One of the participants, sophomore Elizabeth Ochoa, partnered with fellow classmate Kayla Richardson. Their 32-page play was a modern teen drama dealing with anorexia.

This competition is hosted by the Vista Arts program and closes in April. The prize for winning is two thousand dollars and  the winner’s play being produced and performed by a professional acting company in Washington DC at the Kennedy Center.

That’s not the ONLY chance Elizabeth has for national recognition.   She has also taken first place in the school competition for Poetry Out Loud. This competition also originated with Mrs. Poole and the theater class.  Several students  recited poems  from memory and were judged on their delivery.  Elizabeth  will be representing RCHS at the state contest on March 24 in Charleston and if she comes out on top there, she’ll be in the national event at the end of April.
